Final preparations for Saturday’s opening Toolstation Northern Counties East League Premier Division at Winterton Rangers ended badly for Tadcaster Albion.
Tadcaster were beaten by York Minster Engineering Football League Premier Division champions Dunnington at Ings Lane in their last pre-season friendly fixture.
Dunnington, a strong team that contained former Bradford Park Avenue left-back Kieron O’Brien, probably deserved the victory as they created more chances. Tadcaster only threatened late in the game.
The visitors scored the only goal of the game on the half-hour mark. Tadcaster goalkeeper Peter Lawrie, who had an uncomfortable evening after a series of mistakes, made an error on the edge of the box which allowed Dunnington striker Jimmy Wilmoth to lob him and break the deadlock.
The forward line of Wilmoth and Olly Newby continued to cause problems for Tadcaster and Lawrie saw a couple of attempts flash past his post.
Jason Mycoe
The closest Tadcaster came to scoring was with 20 minutes remaining. Substitute Ben Turner found some space and spotted the visitors’ goalkeeper off-the-line and naturally went for the lob. Unfortunately for Turner, the keeper got a fingertip on the ball and guided it onto the crossbar which allowed the Dunnington to clear their lines. The home side pushed for the equaliser late-on, but Dunnington held on for a notable pre-season scalp.
Whilst the result does not matter, Tadcaster did take one blow as defender Jason Mycoe limped off in the first half and will be a doubt for Saturday.

Tadcaster Albion: Lawrie, Ingram, Smith, Batley, Sparks, Mycoe, J Barrett, Taylor, D Barrett, Rice, Coupland. Subs: Lingard, Bissett, Turner.
Referee: M Foster (Woodlesford)
