Former Pontefract Collieries boss Simon Houghton is the new manager of NCEL Division One newbies Shaw Lane Aquaforce.
Houghton makes his return as a number one after two seasons as assistant.
Houghton brings a wealth of Division One experience to Shaw Lane having built up solid reputation at Pontefract, Glasshoughton Welfare and then Athersley last season.
Houghton raised Pontefract from the dead in 2008 and guided them to two top ten finishes before his infamous sacking in March 2011.
He then joined Craig Elliott as his assistant at Glasshoughton a few months later and helped them win promotion to the Premier Division.
After leaving following Elliott’s departure to Ossett, Houghton moved to Athersley and was a coach as they clinched promotion in their first campaign as an NCEL club.
He will be now hoping the same magic can rub off on Sheffield and Hallamshire County Senior League champions Shaw Lane - should Penistone's appeal fail.
The appointment is potentially a masterstroke by the hieraghy at Shaw Lane as Houghton knows the league inside and has an impressive contacts book to match – alongside a proven track record.
An Athersley Recreation statement said: “We would like to thank him for all his efforts and for playing a major part in the fantastic 2012/2013 season which saw us promoted to the NCEL Premier Division.
“We wish him well and good luck in his new role.”
